Fire and Whiskey

Fire and Whiskey
It goes to your head, The fire and the whiskey
Burns through your brain, Roaring like a train
It's a bitch going down, The fire and the whiskey
Drink it til it's done, Cause you're already gone
Where I'm going next I don't really care
If time is what you want I've got some to spare
Get me out of here I'm going nowhere with you..........with you
Drinking on the train Headed to Chicago
We were both insane Don't wanna feel that way again
Pocket full of pills Stomach full of whiskey
Where do I belong The only thing I want is gone
I am sinking fast but I don't mind
What I'm looking for I will never find
Nothing I'm going toward I left it all behind with you.............with you
It's a bullet to the brain The fire and the whiskey
But you love it just the same Yes you love it just the same
And it hurts going down The fire and the whiskey
Warms you to your soul Fools you that you're whole
It goes to your head The fire and the whiskey
Burns through your brain Roaring like a train
It's a bitch going down The fire and the whiskey
Drink it til it's done Cause you're already gone
Drink it til it's done Cause you're already gone

All my friends are drunks, but say they’re sober.
Come the noon day sun they’re wishin’ the day was over.
A little hair of the dog does the trick
And the clock on the wall begins to tick
All my friends are drunks . . . I’m still sober.
Lord knows I try to keep a level head
‘Cuz I don’t want to see the day I wake up dead
Well, I’ve never been known to go easy on a man
And day by day I’m doin’ the best I can
All my friends are drunks, but say they’re sober.
Come the noon day sun they’re wishin’ the day was over.
A little hair of the dog does the trick
And the clock on the wall begins to tick
All my friends are drunks . . . and I could be sober
Now I ain’t sayin’ I never touch a drop
And anytime I want all I gotta do is stop
These are the best friends I have ever found
So shut your mouth and pour me another round
All my friends are drunks, but say they’re sober.
Come the noon day sun they’re wishin’ the day was over.
A little hair of the dog does the trick
And the clock on the wall begins to tick
All my friends are drunks . . . and I’m never sober
All my friends are drunks . . . and I’m never sober

Lost and Alone

Lost and Alone
He wakes up and says today
it's time for him to go his own way
She can tell there's nothing left to say
and watches as he packs
How many times will she be here
waking up to her worst fear
All she knows is that it's clear
there's no going back
She's calling his phone
There's nobody home
She's lost and alone again
How many paths can she walk down
leave some bread crumbs on the ground
And all the birds will come around
until the trail is gone
How many choices can she make
that lead her back to the same mistake
It could be worse but it's not great
so many ways to be wrong
She's calling his phone
There's nobody home
She's lost and alone again
Is this the day that she gives up
the mirror says enough's enough
Wanted easy but she got rough
on that she can depend
Summer ends the days grow cool
wonders why she's still a fool
If someone would please explain the rules
so she can start again
She's calling his phone
There's nobody home
She's lost and alone again, She's lost and alone again

Bucket of Nails

Bucket of Nails
You woke up hung over and stale
All the fairy tales left you by the road
When you leave the stories behind
And make up your mind
You'll let them all go
But it's not hard to keep saying yes
Put on your party dress a smile on your face
You just go somewhere in your head
Do what they said and wait for some grace
When you dream you dream of going away
But it's so easy to stay so easy to fall
When you wake it's just another day
Already tangled and frayed you can't pull it apart
But it's not hard to keep saying yes
Put on your party dress a smile on your face
You just go somewhere in your head
Do what they said and wait for some grace
You went down like a bucket of nails
Right off the rails a train off the tracks
When you pick yourself off the floor
And walk to the door don't ever look back
Cause it's too hard to keep saying yes
Take off your party dress the sun on your face
You just get yourself out of bed
Don't do what they said and look for some grace, grace, grace

Gallow Road
I’m goin’ down Gallows Road, I’m goin’ down Gallows Road,
Goin’ down Gallows Road, got no where else to go
I said I’d be his wife, yes, I said I’d be his wife,
I said I’d be his wife, but something was not right
He done wrong to me, but that he did not see.
Oh, he done wrong to me, and I could not let it be
We went to Willow Bend, but my love was all pretend.
Yes, we went to Willow Bend, that’s where his life would end
I’m goin’ down Gallows Road, got no where else to go
I’m goin’ down Gallows Road, where the devil gets my soul
Soon they’ll bury me, beneath an old oak tree
Soon they’ll bury me, I could not let it be
He said I love you so, how much you’ll never know.
He said I love you so, please don’t ever go
I let go of his hand, and I took his wedding band.
Yes, I let go of his hand, he did not understand
I was in my wedding gown, when I shot him down
Yes I shot him down, and put him in the ground
Now he’s six feet deep, forever in a sleep.
Now he’s six feet deep, for him I do not weep
I’m goin’ down Gallows Road, got no where else to go
I’m goin’ down Gallows Road, where the devil gets my soul
Soon they’ll bury me, beneath an old oak tree
Soon they’ll bury me, I could not let it be
Soon they’ll bury me, I could not let it be
I could not let it be, I could not let it be . . .

The Whiskey King

The Whiskey King
Major Redmond walked a line between revenuers and shine;
The whiskey from his stills was the best in all the hills.
Folks for miles around bought all that he could bring,
And soon he became . . . the Whiskey King.
His Daddy taught him right how to give the whiskey bite;
It took one dollar bill to get your order filled.
The Robin Hood of Swain, but if the truth be told,
The Whiskey King . . . was livin’ bold.
Run Major run, the law is after you.
Run Major run, your shinin’ days are through.
Run Major run, they say you’ll pay the price,
Someday you’ll pay the price.
Major Redman took a stand, so he was a wanted man;
He couldn’t stop the vice he had done for all his life.
When Marshals took up chase with a dozen guns,
The Whiskey King . . . was on the run.
Run Major run, the law is after you.
Run Major run, your shinin’ days are through.
Run Major run, they say you’ll pay the price,
Someday you’ll pay the price.
Major Redmond crossed the line between revenuers and shine;
He sat in Buncombe Jail under twenty-five hundred bail.
When the day came ‘round that they finally took him down,
The Whiskey King . . . had lost his crown.
Run Major run, the law is after you.
Run Major run, your shinin’ days are through.
Run Major run, they say you’ll pay the price,
Someday you’ll pay the price.

Caroline Shipp (Choked to Death by Law)
On this wagon of death beneath a cloud of black and grey
I near my fate on a cold and damp and dark winter’s day
I did not kill my babe and I do not need to fear
I’ll meet him when I pass beyond this veil of sorrowed tears
Oh . . . . . . . . . I am crying
Oh . . . . . . . . . I am crying
In my best black gown and wearin’ a Sunday hat
I can hear the drum a-rollin’ its rat-a-tat-tat-tat
Well, they believed old Mack and what he said he saw
And now I’m being choked to death, choked to death by law
Oh . . . . . . . . . he is lying
Oh . . . . . . . . . he is lying
I know that all is right come my judgment day
But my blood runs cold as I hear the hangman say:
“Give it a good drop, give it a five foot drop
Give it a good drop, don’t let up ‘til her breathin’ stops”
Soon . . . . . . . . . I’ll be flying
Soon . . . . . . . . . I’ll be flying
To watch me die are one hundred and fifty score
My kerchief slowly falls as he drops the gallows door
I did not kill my babe and I do not need to fear
I’ll meet him when I pass beyond this veil of sorrowed tears
Oh . . . . . . . . . I am dying
Oh . . . . . . . . . I am dying

The Hounds of Sheriff John
Was many a body that lost the chase and swung from the hangin’ tree
Despite the pleas of desperate men it was easy to foresee
When the hounds stopped a-runnin’ the conclusion was foregone
Never was one that could break away from the hounds of Sheriff John
Old Joe took the lead and not a scent that he could not track
And those who tried to get away found no turning back
They began to shake and sweat and their hearts began to pound
When they heard Sheriff John’s pack of howling hounds
When the hounds of Sheriff John were set loose upon the trail
They always found their man and it was justice that prevailed
Listen close about the time of the waning of the day
You may hear the hounds of Sheriff John begin to howl and bay
When a gentle hand from high above took the one that he had wed
The soul of Sheriff John was gone and he may as well be dead
A pearl handled pistol could put an end to all his grief and pain
So on a cold and dark winter’s day he shot a bullet in his brain
When the hounds of Sheriff John were set loose upon the trail
They always found their man and it was justice that prevailed
Listen close about the time of the waning of the day
You may hear the hounds of Sheriff John begin to howl and bay
To always uphold the law was the oath that he had sworn
And though he died in twenty-four his promise will be borne
In a long black overcoat he makes his rounds near the Buncombe jail
While the hounds of Sheriff John cry out their lonesome wail
When the hounds of Sheriff John were set loose upon the trail
They always found their man and it was justice that prevailed
Listen close about the time of the waning of the day
You may hear the hounds of Sheriff John begin to howl and bay
You may hear the hounds of Sheriff John begin to howl and bay

Desdemona
I was a stranger in this place until you chose me and let me in
Now I see danger in your face you are the prize that I can't win
Desdemona I said it's not over
Won't you please listen, listen to me
You will be fine, you will be mine
Be a good girl, won't you be
I leave your bedside in the night and when I leave he walks in
I may be a fool, but I am right it is your faith that I can't win
Desdemona you'll see me tomorrow
Do I believe you or will I just grieve
Alone tonight I hope I am right
Be a good girl, won't you be
You've spent a lifetime in this place and when I came you let me in
Your eyes they follow his face I stand beside you but I can't win
I am a danger in your eyes your love is something I could never keep
Words you gave me, only lies he lies beside you when you sleep
Desdemona you'll see me tomorrow
Do I believe you or will I just grieve
Alone tonight I hope I am right
Be a good girl, won't you be
Your hand in mine has grown cold it was the a prize I could never win
My hands on your neck were too bold all that is left is hell and sin
Desdemona I said it's not over
Won't you please listen, listen to me
You will be fine, you will be mine
Be a good girl, won't you be
Desdemona night time is over
Lie down beside you, let myself bleed
You were fine, you were all mine
Be a good girl won't you be

Get Your Dog Out of my Yard
When I first met you I thought I had it made
Never did I think you would ever look my way
My friends, they tried to warn me since I hadn’t learned it yet
That what you see ain’t always what you get
Get your dog out of my yard. Get your cat off my car
I don’t care where you go, just as long as its far
You know what you done, so don’t ask me why
Get your dog out of my yard and get yourself out of my life
Only in my mind did we have a happy home
You started actin’ like an heiress to a throne
In a flash you spent my cash and maxed my credit cards
You sold my truck for a hundred bucks and hocked my best guitar
Get your dog out of my yard. Get your cat off my car
I don’t care where you go, just as long as its far
You know what you done, so don’t ask me why
Get your dog out of my yard and get yourself out of my life
Excuse me while I take just a minute to reload
Cause you know the time has come for you to hit the road
Ain’t no way you’ll understand the price I had to pay
Get your coat, that’s all she wrote, that’s all I’m gonna’ say . . . . except
Get your dog out of my yard. Get your cat off my car
I don’t care where you go, just as long as its far
You know what you done, so don’t ask me why
Get your dog out of my yard and get yourself out of my life

Good Girl

Good Girl
Running............keep on running
Don't you ever slow down................or think of turning around
Driving.................keep on driving
Keep your foot on the gas.............til you hit the next town
You were a good girl.............where did that get you and
You were a good girl.............where are you now cause
Being a good girl...............is all done for now
ooooooooooooooh oooooooooooh
ooooooooooooooh oooh ooh ooh
Drinking..............keep on drinking
Til the ghost in your head.........is finally dead
And thinking...........enough with the thinking
Of what you wish you had done..............and what you did instead
You were a good girl...............pushed til you broke and
You were a good girl............where does that leave you now cause
Being a good girl................is long gone for now
ooooooooooooooh ooooooooooooooooh
ooooooooooooooh oooh oooh oooh
Whiskey............you brought him his whiskey
And he never knew..............what you were planning to do
And burning.................the house is still burning
From the gas that you poured...............and the match that you threw
You were a good girl..............until he broke you and
You were a good girl.................til he ground you down and
Being a good girl...................won't help you now
oooooooooooooh ooooooooooooooh
ooooooooooooh ooooh oooh ooooh

You’re Not Coming Back

You’re Not Coming Back
Glass of water on the counter top
But I won't drink it, I won't spill a drop
Cause I can't swallow this bitter pill
That you left me on the window sill, the window sill
And it's all shattered dreams and broken glass
That has brought me to my knees on this jagged path
Cause you're not coming back
You went south without saying why
But I won't ask and I won't cry
It's just a sickness that I can't shake
And a fever that I can't break, I can't break
I got a bottle of bourbon and if it comes to pass
That I wake up in the morning I'll pour another glass
Cause you're not coming back
I will put on my best dress
And I will wait here cause all that I got left
Is more time until the fever breaks
And I can drink as long as it takes, long as it takes
Cause I got a jug of water and a bitter pill
That has brought me to my knees at the window sill
And it's all bourbon whiskey in a shattered glass
Cause you're not coming back
You're not coming back
You're not coming back
You're not coming back
